An Art Deco era filigree ring in 14K white gold, built around a single large cushion-cut aquamarine of the palest blue. The stone is held in split claw prongs above a fully open gallery, and the shoulders are worked in pierced floral scrollwork that runs right down into the undergallery — turn it over and the piercings are small, irregular and hand-finished, the way these rings were made in the years around 1915 to 1930, when filigree was cut and pierced rather than cast in one pour.

The cutting is of its time too: a broad table and simple, open faceting that draws light through the stone instead of bouncing it back, giving it a clear, watery look in daylight. Age sits honestly in the recesses of the filigree; the claws are crisp and the shank plain and clean at the back.

It is a true size 3 — a pinky ring for most, or a ring finger for genuinely small hands — and it has survived at that size, which is part of why pieces like this so rarely come up: period filigree in white gold, in this size, is scarce simply because so little of it was made and less of it survived unsized.

14K white gold. Aquamarine, cushion cut. Ring size 3.
