A superb late Victorian sterling silver cigarette case by M H Meyer Ltd, fully hallmarked for Birmingham, circa 1896.
Both the front and back are decorated with dense all-over engraved foliate scrollwork — classic Victorian ornament — with a shaped cartouche to the front bearing a hand-engraved script monogram. The interior is gilt, and the case opens and closes crisply on a secure push-button catch.
Hallmarks: maker’s mark MHM (M H Meyer Ltd), Birmingham anchor assay mark, lion passant for sterling silver, and W date letter for 1896 — all crisp and legible inside the case.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The engraving is sharp, the hinge is tight, the catch snaps shut securely and the gilt interior is bright. Light surface wear consistent with age; no splits, no repairs noted.
