Some rings follow fashion. This one was built by hand, in the middle of a war, to out-shout it.

This is a Retro tank-style ring from circa 1940–1945 — the years when American jewelry went massive, architectural, and unapologetic. The stepped, bombé head rises off a broad tapered shank in interlocking geometric forms: a flower cluster of seven old-cut diamonds in white-metal collets at its heart, a pavé strap of small diamonds sweeping over the top, two channels of calibré-cut rubies flanking the cluster, and a fluted gold fan beneath it all, finished with a single diamond at its point. The gallery underneath is pierced openwork — the mark of a ring that was fabricated, not poured.

And it was: the shank is stamped HAND MADE, beside the 14K karat stamp and a small "3" bench number. This ring was bench-made by a working jeweler — built up from worked metal, soldered assemblies, and hand-cut seats — at a time when wartime scarcity pushed much Retro jewelry into exactly this kind of small-workshop production. No maker's name is stamped, and we attribute none; the hand of the maker is in the work itself.

The ring has been worn and enjoyed for the better part of eighty years, and it shows it honestly — surface scratches and scuffs across the polished gold, light dark spotting inside the shank, and the HAND MADE stamp partially worn (the "MADE" is soft; "14K" and "HAND" are clear), all shown as they are in the photographs, including the hallmark macro and the unedited originals.

Details:

  • Handmade (bench-fabricated) — stamped "14K" and "HAND MADE" inside the shank, with a small "3" bench number beside the karat mark; there is no maker's mark, and no maker is attributed
  • Retro era, circa 1940–1945; tank-style bombé design of stepped, interlocking geometric forms; American manufacture
  • 14K gold (yellow/rose-toned) with white-metal diamond settings — the period two-tone construction
  • A flower cluster of seven old-cut diamonds; a pavé strap of small old-cut diamonds over the top; one further diamond at the point of the fluted fan — approximately 14–17 small diamonds in total (counted from the photographs; the seven cluster stones and the fan-point stone are individually clear, the strap stones partly obscured by angle and wear)
  • Two channel-set rows of calibré-cut rubies, approximately 7–8 stones (counted from the photographs)
  • Rubies: calibré-cut; no carat weight is stated for any stone
  • Openwork pierced gallery; fluted fan (sunburst) base
  • Ring size 7.5
  • Condition: good vintage condition, with honest wear — surface scratches and scuffs across the polished surfaces; light dark spotting inside the shank; the HAND MADE stamp partially worn ("MADE" soft, the rest legible). All stones are present and seated, as the photographs show. Please review all photographs, including the unedited originals, before purchasing
