A late Victorian festoon necklace, American, c.1890, in 10K gold with Mississippi River pearls.
Fine gold chains are swagged between four baroque river pearl beads, and from the swags hang five elongated river pearls — the tapered form the trade calls dog tooth pearls. Every pearl in the necklace grew in a Mississippi River mussel: natural American freshwater pearls, gathered in the decades when the river fisheries supplied an American pearl trade that has long since closed.
The festoon — draped swags of chain falling between set points — was one of the late Victorian period's most romantic necklace forms, and the river pearl version in gold is the distinctly American one.
